Sundarambal, Family Care Volunteer
Sundarambal is a 46 year old mother of 2 who has volunteered in service to her community, Samathuvapuram, for over 3 years. In close collaboration with our trusted partners, the Thirumalai Charity Trust (TCT), she has acquired a lot of knowledge about health issues prevalent in the region, enabling her to identify illnesses and refer fellow villagers for treatment at Thirumalai Mission Hospital (TMH).
- Sundarambal has been trained by TCT to recognize the symptoms of various maladies such as diabetes, hypertension, cataracts, osteoporosis, women’s health, and more. Using health kits comprised of basic medical diagnostic tools such as a glucometer and blood pressure monitor, she is able to confirm the presence of disease within her community and refer them for medical care at TMH.
- Despite having attained only primary school education, Sundarambal has had a considerable impact in the lives of many, gaining much respect and recognition in her community where people regularly reach out to her for health counseling. Furthermore, she is a well respected member of Annam, a Community Based Organization fostered by TCT in an effort to educate villagers on health issues, encouraging them to more actively involve themselves in cultivating well-being within their communities.
- Sundarambal feels rewarded when her villagers get the vital care they need, “This service is a boon to me. My 2 sons have jobs and my husband runs his barber shop. The spare time I have is spent on helping my people.”
Through the combination of volunteerism and community involvement with provision of comprehensive healthcare and education we firmly believe we can guide our beneficiaries towards sustainably enhanced well-being.
